Letter from Shirley Floyd Williams November 29, 2005

Thanks for keeping us up on this search.

Gene< I had written to your earlier and told you that I am Shirley Floyd Williams--from Lamesa. I worked at Ashley Electric. My mother, Marthie Slover Floyd, also worked there. She told me several times that we were cousins or something , but never gave me the details. What was your Mother's name and maiden name?

There was a question about the wives of Dr. George Slover. We show that his first wife was Margaret Lucinda Culwell--#2 Mary Elizabeth Richerson. I do not have the dates of the marriages or death dates for the wives. I do have some information about his career from the "History of Texas Methodism 1900-1960" This was sent to me by my cousin, Claud Slover in Midland. Their church had this book in their library. George is buried in Parker Co,Tx--Greenwood Cemetery at Weatherford. He died 20 Dec 1942. We recently visited the public library in Weatherford and found information about Slovers and Shadles. I have not worked any of this information yet.

I also have some cemetery books from Parker County and Wise County. An e-mail friend sent me varoius information and other cemetery records. Ira S. Slover, grandfather of John Williams Slover. Ira married Mary Shadle. He is buried at Boonsville Cemetery--close to Bridgeport,Wise County. There was a write up about John William Slover family compiled by Mrs. D.R. Wimberly and she had obtained the information from Mrs. Mary Eunice Wimberly Slover. This must have been from the Wise County history.

It tells that Ira S. Slover and Mary Ann Shadele--spelling different-lived near Weatherford, Tx--Parker Co, on Garrett's Creek. This states that Ira and Mary's children were
William S. Slover
J.M. Slover, Dr. George Slover
Rebecca Ann (called Rebbie)--she married John Culwell.

Williams S. moved to Weatherford and married Emma Gymn. Later he moved with his family to Bridgeport. Here he owned a hardware store for many years.
Their only child was John Williams Slover b 2 Nov 1888.. He married Mary Eunice Wimberly on 24 May 1917 in the Wimberly home near Boonsville, Tx Wise County.
This family and grandparents attended many "camp" meetings both in and near Weatherford and in the Bethel Community, near Boonsville, where they lived. They lived near the Bethel school and the church. The Slover later moved to Paradise,Tx--Wise Co. Later moving to Memphis, Tx. John William Slover passed away 4 June 1960 in ths home of his son, John William Slover in Phillips, Tx. He was laid to rest in the Paradise cemetery in Paradise, Tx.

Jimmy and I also searched out the Goshen cemetery near Spring town--Parker County. There are Slover, Shadles and Culwells buried there.

I hope that this is helpful and not too confusing.

Sincerely,

Shirley Floyd Williams

Southwestern University

Southwestern University is a private selective, four-year, undergraduate liberal arts college located in Georgetown, Texas, USA. Founded in 1840 by the United Methodist Church, it is the oldest institution of higher learning in Texas, continuing the charters granted by the Legislature (Texas Congress 1836-1845) to Rutersville College in 1840, Wesleyan College of Saint Augustine, Texas in 1844, McKenzie College of Clarksville, Texas in 1848, and Soule University of Chappell Hill, Texas in 1856. None of these four institutions lasted very long, but in 1873, the union of these four institutions opened in Georgetown as Texas University. Wanting the name for a state school of nearly the same name, the University of Texas, in Austin, the state granted the new university a charter in 1875 under the name of Southwestern University continuing in the tradition of the original charter for Rutersville. As of 2004, 1,265 undergraduate students were enrolled.
