These Reports from Home are from 1945.  Of particular note is the story about the new Presidential Seal and the 9,000 Balloon Bombs launched by the Japanese. Most of the balloons carried 4 incendiary bombs, 1 anti-personnel and a flash bomb to destroy the balloon.  The only reported casualties were six deaths in Lakeview, Oregon when picknicking children picked up a balloon and it detonated.

About 1980 one of the Japanese balloons was found on a ranch near Laredo, Texas.
