This page fits perfectly in our R&R section.  At 2800 yards, American Lake Golf Course, in Tacoma Washington, is the only course in the United States designed for disabled veterans. 77 year old retired Navy Veteran, Harold "Pepper" Roberts, keeps the course running and accessible to Veterans.  Jack Nicklaus volunteered his design services to make the course easy for Veterans in specially designed carts to navigate.

According to Roberts, every group out here is like a small support group. "...a lot of young kids come back wounded pretty seriously and they think it's over. Then they come out here and find out it isn't".

The essence of their Mission Statement: The American Lake Veterans Golf Course is dedicated to providing, teaching and promoting the benefits of golf to Veterans. The American Lake Veterans Golf Course is committed to providing a therapeutic environment where accommodation is welcome and all golfers can enjoy the benefits of golf, such as exercise and relaxation in a positive and accepting social environment. With these benefits it is our vision that through golf, veterans will increase their independence and improve their attitudes toward health and thus, their lives will be enriched.

Hospital and in-patients play at no cost while active duty and retired military pay $15 greens fee.

The specially designed solo rider golf carts are allowed on the greens and in the traps.
